Psychotherapy
My approach is generally cognitive-behavioral, but integrates mindfulness and
interpersonal perspectives and draws from the latest knowledge in neuroscience.
When anxiety is a problem, I may use biofeedback to teach effective relaxation
strategies. All of these approaches involve learning to become aware of your
patterns of thinking, feeling and interacting, and finding alternatives to these
patterns which allow new learning.
Different age groups, however, require adjustments to the developmental level of
the client. With children, the emphasis is more on behavior and their relationships
with parents, peers and teachers. With adolescents and adults, it shifts to more
cognitive and relational interventions. When working with children, I work both with
the child and parents to help facilitate change, although the amount of time I spend
with individuals tends to increase with age. In some cases I will recommend that
the whole family work together in family therapy.
To help you decide if you have a mental health problem, try using an online
screening tool. These screens are not a substitute for a careful evaluation by a
professional, but can be helpful in understanding patterns of symptoms you might
be experiencing.
